2027 GMC Yukon: Denali Ultimate vs AT4 Ultimate for Austin Families
Two Yukons sit at the top of the 2027 lineup, and they were built for two different people. One is a leather-lined highway machine with a screen the size of a laptop. The other leans toward dirt and wears a paint color the Denali can’t order. Both carry the word Ultimate on the tailgate.
Out here the decision usually comes down to how you spend a Saturday. Boat ramp on Lake Travis, or a caliche road past Hamilton Pool. A Yukon handles both; it just brings different equipment depending on which badge you check.
So let’s set the 2027 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate and AT4 Ultimate next to each other and talk about what actually separates them for a family shopping the 2027 GMC Yukon Austin market. It’s the conversation we have most weeks at Covert Buick GMC Bee Cave.
The 2027 Yukon Lineup, Top to Bottom
Five trims, and that’s the whole ladder: Elevation, AT4, AT4 Ultimate, Denali, and Denali Ultimate.
Worth stating plainly, because it still trips people up: SLE and SLT are not Yukon trims anymore. They went away with the refresh. If you’re cross-shopping an older Yukon on a pre-owned lot and the trim names don’t line up with what you’re reading online, that’s the reason.
2027 is not a redesign year. It’s a packaging year, and a few of the changes matter more than the spec sheet suggests:
- Super Cruise standard on Denali. It used to be an option box; for 2027 it comes with the trim, which quietly changes how a Denali stacks up against a loaded AT4.
- Enhanced Trailering standard on AT4 Ultimate and Denali Ultimate. Both top trims get the trailering content without hunting through package codes.
- Coastal Dune paint. New for 2027 and exclusive to AT4 and AT4 Ultimate. You can’t get it on a Denali, so if that color is the thing you love, your trim decision is half made.
- Reworked packages further down. A new Elevation Preferred Package bundles the Technology Package, Super Cruise, a power panoramic sunroof, and a power-sliding center console; the AT4 Premium Package got reorganized on similar lines.
- New wheels up top. Denali picks up a 20-inch machined Deep Void Metallic wheel. Denali Ultimate moves to a 22-inch seven-spoke ultra-bright machined design.
Choose the Engine Before You Choose the Badge
GMC carries three engines into 2027, all through a 10-speed automatic.
| Engine | Horsepower | Torque |
|---|---|---|
| 5.3L V8 | 355 hp | 383 lb-ft |
| 6.2L V8 | 420 hp | 460 lb-ft |
| 3.0L Duramax turbodiesel I-6 | 305 hp | 495 lb-ft |
The 6.2L is what most people picture when somebody says Denali. Smooth, quiet at highway speed on MoPac, and unbothered climbing out of the lake basin on RM 620 with the whole family aboard. The Duramax is the sleeper: less horsepower than either gas V8, more torque than both, and torque is what you feel with a trailer on the hitch or a week of luggage headed to Fredericksburg.
Which engine pairs with which trim varies by build, so read the window sticker. GMC also does not publish engine-by-engine towing ratings for the Yukon, and we’d rather walk you through the trailering guide than hand you a number we can’t stand behind.
AT4 Ultimate: Built for the Rougher Half of the Hill Country
The AT4 side is the off-road-leaning one, and AT4 Ultimate is its ceiling. Enhanced Trailering is standard for 2027, and so is Super Cruise, bundled with a three-year OnStar plan. Coastal Dune belongs to this half of the lineup and nowhere else.
GMC has not published a complete trim-by-trim hardware breakdown for the 2027 Yukon, so we’re not going to recite suspension components and tire sizes we can’t source. What we can do is pull the build sheet on any AT4 Ultimate on our lot and read it with you line by line, today.
Who should actually want one? Anyone whose driving regularly leaves pavement. Ranch gates off Hamilton Pool Road, gravel out toward Spicewood, a lease road in November. If the worst surface you meet all year is the Y at Oak Hill construction zone, you’re buying capability that will sit unused.
Denali Ultimate: Screen Space and Hands-Free Miles
Denali Ultimate argues the opposite case, and the interior does most of the arguing. A 16.8-inch diagonal Premium GMC Infotainment System anchors the dash. A 15-inch head-up display is available, as are dual 12.6-inch rear-seat entertainment screens, which sound indulgent right up until hour three of I-10 with kids behind you.
Super Cruise is the feature that changes daily life, though. It runs on more than 600,000 miles of compatible roads across North America, and the Yukon supports hands-free trailering, which almost nothing else does. Three years of the required OnStar connectivity comes with the vehicle; after that, OnStar lists the Super Cruise plan at $39.99 a month.
Denali loses nothing in the 2027 shuffle either: Super Cruise going standard there, not just on Denali Ultimate, is the best value move in this year’s lineup. Look through our Yukon inventory before you assume you need the top trim.
Yukon or Yukon XL
Same vehicle, different tail. The XL stretches behind the third row. With all three rows upright, a standard Yukon swallows groceries and a couple of duffel bags just fine. The XL takes a family of seven’s luggage without somebody riding to Marble Falls with a suitcase on their knees.
An XL is harder to park downtown and longer to swing into a tight West Lake Hills driveway. Most Austin families we work with land on the standard Yukon unless they tow often or road-trip with a full house. Sit in both. Ten minutes settles it faster than any chart.
Towing a Boat to Lake Travis
GMC rates the Yukon at up to 8,400 lbs when properly equipped. That covers most of what backs down the ramp on a Saturday morning: a bowrider, a mid-size wake boat, a pair of skis on a double.
What matters next is your trailer, your tongue weight, and your configuration. Ratings move with drivetrain and equipment, so the figure on your build sheet is the only one that counts. Bring the trailer specs and we’ll match them against the trailering guide before anybody signs anything.
Worth repeating: Enhanced Trailering standard on both Ultimate trims means camera views and trailer management content are already there rather than buried in a package. If you hook up more than twice a year, that matters.
Quick Answers for Austin Yukon Shoppers
Q: Is the Duramax diesel cheaper to run than the 6.2L V8?
A: Diesel changes the math in several directions, and GMC doesn’t publish a side-by-side cost figure. The Duramax makes 495 lb-ft against the 6.2L’s 460 lb-ft, so it works less hard doing the same job. Fuel prices and your annual mileage decide the rest.
Q: Can a grown adult sit in the third row?
A: Yes, and that’s unusual in this class. The Yukon’s third row is sized for real people, not emergencies. Bring your tallest teenager to the test drive and let them pick the seat.
Q: How much of my commute does Super Cruise actually cover?
A: Super Cruise works on more than 600,000 miles of compatible roads in North America, including the interstate and highway miles most Austin drivers rack up. Around town you drive normally. The payoff shows up on I-35, US-290, and long hauls out of the metro.
Q: Which trim is the best choice for towing?
A: Both Ultimate trims include Enhanced Trailering as standard for 2027, so they start from the same position. From there it’s engine choice and equipment rather than the badge. Bring your trailer information and we’ll confirm the rating on the exact vehicle.
Q: What actually changed for 2027 versus a 2026 Yukon?
A: Feature and packaging changes, not a redesign. Super Cruise became standard on Denali, Enhanced Trailering on both Ultimate trims, Coastal Dune paint arrived for the AT4 trims, and packages were reorganized. Midnight Pine paint was dropped.
Q: Do you service the Yukon here after I buy it?
A: We do, same building. Our service department handles everything from the first oil change through diesel maintenance, and you can book online or by phone. Hours run Monday through Friday 7 to 6 and Saturday 8 to 3.
